Consultations and examinations in psychiatry at Levitas Medical Center in Sofia.
What is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders and emotional conditions.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who evaluates mental health and provides pharmacological treatment, psychotherapy, or a combined approach for conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, insomnia, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders.
When should you consult a psychiatrist?
A consultation is recommended in cases of:
- Persistent low mood, anxiety, or stress
- Panic attacks, fears, or phobias
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive sleepiness)
- Sudden changes in mood or behavior
- Loss of interest, motivation, or energy
- Difficulties with concentration or memory
- Substance use or dependency issues
- Thoughts of self-harm or suicidal ideation
- Psychological distress following trauma or prolonged stress
How to prepare for the appointment?
To ensure the most accurate assessment:
- Describe your symptoms clearly, when they started, how they present, and how they affect your daily life.
- Provide information about previous mental or medical conditions.
- Prepare a list of medications and supplements you are currently taking.
- Be ready to discuss recent life changes or stressful events.
- Prepare questions regarding treatment options, duration, and possible side effects.
What happens during the appointment?
The consultation begins with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, including a discussion of your symptoms, emotional state, medical history, and lifestyle.
This is followed by a mental status examination, evaluating mood, thought processes, behavior, cognition, memory, and attention.
If necessary, additional medical tests may be recommended to rule out underlying physical causes. Based on the evaluation, the psychiatrist will develop an individualized treatment plan, which may include medication, referral for psychotherapy, or a combined therapeutic approach.
